Balmoral State High School has a proud tradition of debating, with teams representing the school across multiple year levels. Our program is supported by the Queensland Debating Union (QDU), the official state body for debating in Queensland and an affiliate of the Australian Debating Federation (ADF).

Debating gives students the chance to develop highly valuable skills: confidence in public speaking, the ability to build clear and logical arguments, teamwork, audience awareness, and—most importantly—the willingness to listen to opposing views and respond with respect and insight.

Students benefit from QDU workshops held outside of school and can access the QDU Academy via Zoom to prepare for upcoming debates. At Balmoral, debating teams meet regularly one morning each week to plan and practise together. Throughout the year, students typically compete in four to five debates, held in the greater Brisbane area in the evening.
