Balmoral State High has a proud history of debating, fielding teams across most grades. The Queensland Debating Union (QDU) Inc. organises the competition and is an affiliate of the Australian Debating Federation (ADF) and endorsed as the only State body of debating in Queensland.
The art of debate involves mastering valuable skills: the confidence to speak in public; the construction of a logical argument; the capacity to work as a member of a team; the ability to read an audience’s reactions; and, perhaps most importantly, the willingness to hear others’ arguments, and to respond to them.
QDU workshops are held outside of school to upskill students, and QDU provides an Academy to explore each of the topics via Zoom to prepare for each debate. At school, students meet regularly one morning per week to plan as a team. The commitment at high school level is usually for a round of four or five debates each year which are held at schools in the greater Brisbane area at either 6:00 or 8:00 pm.
