The Horizons Academy at Balmoral State High School challenges students to develop and apply skills in divergent and critical thinking, teamwork and collaboration, innovation and creativity, as well as, effective communication. The individual talents of each student in the Academy are nurtured by our specialist-trained teachers, and supported by a rigorous curriculum that encourages students to become leaders in their field, while being active members of their community.
What we offer
Our Horizons Academy provides learning experiences beyond the mainstream classroom. Commencing in Year 7, the Academy sees students challenged across a range of subject areas by addressing complex problem solving and team activities. Later in the year, Academy members will participate in project-based learning, designing novel and effective solutions that address the needs of a local community project. This develops students' ability to transfer their knowledge through application in real world situations.
The Horizons Academy provides:
- Curriculum extension to develop higher order critical thinking skills, creative problem solving and application of skills across a range of subject areas and texts.
- Project-based experience using an inquiry approach that supports students in self-directed learning while exploring community-related problems of practice.
- Increased exposure to a wider variety of academic opportunities, activities and challenges that provide deeper insight into the content in the classroom. This may include Big Science, Tournament of Minds, academic competitions and excursions to Queensland University.
Enrichment Opportunities
- Junior Problem Solving
- Debating & UN Public Speaking
- Aerospace Gateway enrichment programs
